Pregnancy changes what you need from a mattress, sometimes week by week. At 16 weeks you might still prefer your original medium-firm mattress. At 28 weeks, hip pressure has you reaching for every pregnancy pillow you can find. At 36 weeks, any surface that isn't perfectly calibrated to side-sleeping keeps you awake. And then postpartum hits and suddenly your weight, position, and recovery needs are completely different again. The Layla Hybrid's flippable design speaks directly to this problem: one mattress, two distinct feels, no return and re-purchase required. This review evaluates how well that adaptability actually delivers for pregnant and postpartum sleepers. For the full range of mattresses we tested, see our pregnancy mattress guide.

Who the Layla Hybrid Is For

Good fit for:

  • Couples who want one mattress to serve different firmness needs across pregnancy and postpartum without buying twice.
  • Pregnant side sleepers in the second and third trimesters who need soft cushioning at the hip and shoulder โ€” the soft side delivers.
  • Hot sleepers who want foam contouring with better heat management than a pure foam bed โ€” copper infusion and coil airflow both help.
  • Anyone interested in antimicrobial properties โ€” the copper-infused foam layer reduces microbial growth on the mattress surface over time.

Should skip if:

  • You have diagnosed lower back pain requiring firm lumbar support โ€” the soft side may be too soft, and the firm side may lack the pressure relief you need for side sleeping.
  • You want the longest possible trial โ€” 120 nights ends before most second-trimester purchases will reach the due date.
  • Budget is under $1,300 โ€” comparable hybrid options exist at a lower price point.
  • You cannot get help flipping the mattress โ€” a 13-inch hybrid requires two people to flip safely, which matters in late pregnancy.

What We Tested

We evaluated the Layla Hybrid queen for 14 nights, testing the soft side for 10 nights and the firm side for 4 nights. Testers were at 25 weeks and 33 weeks gestation. We focused on soft-side performance for pregnancy comparisons, as that is the recommended configuration for side-sleeping pregnant women. Scores cover hip and shoulder pressure relief, temperature regulation, partner disturbance, repositioning ease, edge support, and morning back pain.

Performance: Pressure Relief (Soft Side)

The Layla's soft side provided the deepest hip and shoulder contouring of any mattress we tested โ€” an expected outcome given its 3-4 out of 10 firmness rating. Our 25-week tester who had been experiencing hip discomfort since week 18 reported immediate relief on the first night. She rated hip comfort at 4.6 out of 5. Our 33-week tester similarly rated it at 4.4 out of 5, though she noted that the very soft surface required precise pregnancy pillow positioning to prevent her top hip from rolling forward.

The copper-infused foam does not feel dramatically different from standard memory foam to a sleeper, but the antimicrobial property is a nice practical benefit for a product you will use nightly through sweaty pregnancy months and postpartum recovery.

Performance: Temperature

Copper is a thermal conductor, which means the copper-infused foam absorbs body heat faster than plain foam and moves it away from the surface somewhat more efficiently. In practice, our testers reported the Layla sleeping noticeably cooler than the Nectar Memory Foam and roughly equivalent to the Helix Midnight. The pocketed coil base also contributes to airflow. This is one of the Layla's genuine strengths for pregnancy, where body temperature running high is a near-universal complaint from 24 weeks onward.

Performance: Repositioning and Responsiveness

The pocketed coil base gives the Layla a more responsive, bouncy character than a pure foam mattress on the soft side. Rolling over at night requires less effort than on the Nectar. The soft foam does offer some grip, but not to the degree of a dense all-foam bed. Our testers rated repositioning at 4.0 out of 5 โ€” better than the Nectar (3.6) and slightly behind the Saatva Classic (4.3) and Helix Midnight (4.1) in this category.

Performance: Motion Isolation

Hybrid mattresses isolate motion less effectively than all-foam beds but better than traditional innerspring. The Layla performed similarly to the Helix Midnight in this category โ€” averaging 2.1 partner disturbance events per night, versus 1.3 on the Nectar and 3.1 on the Saatva. If your partner is a light mover, this is not a concern. If they are very active at night, an all-foam option will serve you better.

Performance: Firm Side (for Reference)

We also evaluated the firm side for 4 nights. It felt supportive and solid โ€” genuinely firm at 7-8 out of 10. For the third trimester with full side sleeping, it was too firm for our testers without additional padding (a topper was needed). The firm side is more appropriate for back sleeping in the first trimester, for heavier-framed sleepers, or for postpartum recovery once your body is no longer carrying pregnancy weight and lumbar support becomes the priority again.
